An introduction to the Sango Language
Sango (also spelled Sangho) is the main language spoken in the Central African Republic. There are an estimated 400,000 native speakers, as well as between 1.6 to 5 million second-language speakers worldwide.
Sango was originally used by river traders as a vehicular language or lingua franca, to make communication possible between different tribes not sharing the same mother tongue. Sango is based on the Northern Ngbandi dialect of the Sango tribe, and also shows some French influence.
Since the 1960s, with the fast growth of the capital of the Central African Republic, Bangui, the Sango language experienced immense development and increasingly wide application. Rural immigrants who came to the city spoke many different languages and used Sango only as a lingua franca, but their children now use Sango as their main (and sometimes only) language.
Sango became a national language in 1964 and an official language in 1991.
